THE HEALTH HAZARD OF SKIN LIGHTENING PRODUCTS AND NATURAL WAYS OF LIGHTENING YOUR SKIN

Result of Whitening Creams

In the world today, the quest to enhance beauty has made most people especially women to damage or even cause harm to their health. They tend to forget that most of these cosmetics they use cause more harm than good to their health. According to Vance “Not everything we women do in an attempt to enhance our beauty is necessarily good for us”. Care should be taken when purchasing any cosmetic products because the components from some of the lightening creams result to exfoliation of the skin and prolong usage of such creams and soaps can be hazardous to our health. The fragrances used in most of these creams are chemical laden and these chemicals tarnish the skin. Therefore take time to read the composition or ingredients used in such lightening creams.

Skin colour to a large extent is genetic but some factors like sun burn, hormone fluctuation can also cause dark spot and pigmentation. Skin lightening products are been used to get a fairer complexion, remove dark spots, freckles, age spots or acne marks. Definitely you must have heard a lot about the dangers associated with the use of these skin lightening creams that are chemical laden. The three major and vital chemical laden ingredients used by Cosmetic Industries in the production of most of the skin lightening products include mercury, hydroquinone and steroid corticosteroid. Any cream that contains these chemical laden components discolours the finger nails after a long usage. If the cream is exposed, it changes to a dark or brownish colour. So beware and take note.

HYDROQUINONE is a probable carcinogenic substance that inhibits the formation of melanin. If used for a long period can cause skin cancer, ochronosis etc. It has been ranked as poisonous as it has also been banned in United Kingdom.

STEROID CORTICOSTEROID – causes overweight and infertility in ladies.

MERCURY in cosmetics is of two types – Organic and inorganic mercury. Organic Mercury is used in skin lightening creams and it contains 1- 10% of Mercury Ammonium while soaps contain 1- 3% of Mercury Iodide. They look grey or cream colour and this can be found on the packaging or ingredient list. The Inorganic Mercury is used in the production of eye make-up and mascara. Mercury results to psychiatric disorder or birth defect in most cases, kidney failure, memory loss, numbness, insomnia, depression, weight loss, tingling around the lips, feet and hands, headaches, irritability, irreversible discoloration of skin etc.

In a nutshell any skin lightening cream that contains Mercury, Steroid Corticosteroid, and Hydroquinone is dangerous to health. When looking for natural remedies observe those that have natural ingredients like natural Aloe Vera, Ginseng, Sepicalm etc or products that contain antioxidants and keratin. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight when using these natural remedies.
